Castle

History

The town’s origins are very ancient. It was first mentioned in 1189 by Pope Clement III in a papal bull which was destined to Bono, bishop of Siena, and conferred him the property of the Castle of Pugna, that had been burned and almost entirely destroyed by the Florentines during the bloody battle of Monteaperti.
The castle therefore owes its name to the site’s strategic position, that dominates the Valley of Arbia, a border zone where several clashes between the Senese, Florentines and Aretines took place during the course of centuries.
‘Pugna’ is the Latin word for ‘battle’.
Since the 12th century, the castle was the stage of clashes. The ancient wooden shield bearing a carved burning tower, that has become the insignia of the family Fumi Cambi Gado, dates back to the same period of time. This insignia can now be found on the label of the Super Tuscan CASTELPUGNA wine.

Family

History

The founder, Count Carlo Alberto Fumi Cambi Gado, an excellent grape-grower and winemaker belonging to one of Orvieto’s noble families, moved to the estate in Siena and, with uncommon passion – which he later transmitted to his son Luigi Alberto – selected the best of every single vintage, obtaining a highly prestigious wine.
